Volkswagen's One-Litre-Car
2001-06-28 - By Philip Byrne

Volkswagen's One-Litre-Car These are computer-illustrations of what is likely to become Volkswagen's one-litre car that Ferdinand Piëch, head of the Volkswagen group, has announced recently.

He wants to present the car to the public before he retires in about two years, although the car might not come to the dealers before 2004.

VolkswagenThe up-coming one-litre car is breaking with all rules of conventional car design - solely the mudguards and the lights front and rear remind of those of the New Beetle.

Reminding of the Messerschmitt and Auto-Union Buble Cars of the 1950's and 30's respectively, the new car will offer room for two persons which are seated one behind the other rather than side by side.

That gives the car an enormously low cx-rate of 0.1 which, in combination with the use of light-weight material such as aluminium and carbon, will help reduce the consumption to a maximum of 1 litre of diesel for 100 kilometres.

VolkswagenYet today the car is existing and driving on secret test tracks and insiders released a couple of data: The cx-rate, as mentioned, won't exceed 0.1, the weight will be around 500 kilograms, the three-cylinder TDI will be mounted between the rear wheels and the cabin will be very narrow and won't offer much comfort in order to keep weight low.
