Highly rated 17 year old motor racing prospect Michael Devaney, from Rathfarnham, Dublin, is to contest the German based Formula BMW Championship this season after it was announced today that the Motorsport Ireland ‘Young Racing Driver of the Year’ has secured a seat with reigning champions Mamerow Racing.
The exciting deal is the most significant of the much talked about racer’s career and will see the Irish teenager compete against more than thirty drivers from across Europe. A twenty round championship run over ten events, it will take the former National Kart Champion to some of Europe’s top circuits including Hockenheim, A1 Ring, Zandvoort and the Nurburgring where the series supports the European Grand Prix.
Commenting on his deal to drive for Mamerow Racing, who have taken back to back Formula BMW championship honours for the past three seasons, Michael said, ‘I am delighted to have secured a drive with Mamerow Racing. They are a very professional outfit who have an excellent track record and I believe we will work well together.’ He added, ‘This is the best move for my long-term ambitions. The new Formula BMW car is fantastic and with BMW Motorsport behind the series it is all going to be very exciting.’
Michael enters the one make wings and slicks formula on the back of a successful debut season in car racing which saw him win two rounds of the Irish Formula Ford Zetec Championship with DD Racing. The son of former F2 racer Bernard Devaney, Michael went on to win motorsport’s biggest prize when he was crowned the Motorsport Ireland ‘Young Racing Driver of the Year’. Backed by the Irish Sports Council and Dunlop, the prestigious award saw him receive IR£20,000 in funding and a week in Las Vegas at the highly regarded racing Academy of former Irish Grand Prix star Derek Daly.
Michael, who retains the backing of Seahorse.ie and Movie Magic, will begin a weeks fitness training in Bavaria tomorrow with BMW before making his race debut at Hockenheim on 19-21 April.
