A sneak look at the BMW 2-series

This is the latest computer generated picture of what the new 2-Series coupe could look like. The BMW 2-series is due for sale sometime in 2004 in Europe.
 A five-door hatchback version called the 1-Series will target the family compact market, but will most notably go head to head against the VW Golf.
Based on the fact that the BMW 2-Series will be very similar in size to keep the 3-Series Compact, the 2-Series could be the end of the road for the 3-Series Compact range.
A convertible version based on the CS1 concept car is also on the cards, but is yet to be approved - BMW is worried though as it could steal sales from the forthcoming Z3 (or Z4 as the new model will be badged).
BMW wants to build more than 1.2 million by 2005, which should account for 100,000 sales a year. The new 1-Series and 2-Series engine range will start with the 1.6 litre four-cylinder engines right up to possibly 2.4 litre 240 bhp 4-cylinder M-Power version. It will retain BMW's outstanding rear wheel drive set-up to ensure handling advantages and driver appeal over its rivals. Production is expected to start in spring 2004 at the Regensburg plant in Germany.
