NCT Service contract signed Mr Noel Dempsey T.D, Minister for the Environment and Local Government, and Madame Romaine Romanet, Chief Executive, SGS Ireland signed the contract for the establishment of the new car testing service at a ceremony in the Custom House.

Car testing, which is a requirement under EU Law, is being introduced in Ireland on the 4th January 2000. It's introduction will enhance road safety and environmental protection. The contract is for a 10 year period and the cost of a National Car Test will be: £35 with the re-test fee being £19.80. Free re-tests will be given where test lane equipment is not used.

The items incorporated in the test are specified in the EU Directive and include suspension, equipment, steering, lighting and signalling, vehicle identification, wheels and tyres, transmission, bodywork, chassis and chassis components, braking system and exhaust emissions. The way the test is to be carried out and the reasons for failure will be documented in the Car Tester's Manual which will be widely available at least 6 months before testing is required.
