Murray take debut win at Silverstone
2003-06-24 - By Philip Byrne
Promising Irish saloon car racer Eoin Murray earned his first ever ELF Clio Renaultsport UK Cup race win at the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit over the weekend.
Driving for Xcel Motorsport, the Firhouse driver put in a superb performance to win the sixth round of the ultra competitive one make championship.
At the beginning of the race, which took place on Saturday, 2001 champion Daniel Buxton took the early lead from Mark Davies with Murray sneaking through into second at Copse Corner regaining the place he lost to the Yorkshireman at the green lights.
By lap three Murray had seized the lead from Buxton before Davies then found a way past and as the pair fought side by side for position 20-year-old Murray started to open up a sizeable lead over the chasing pack.
Commenting on his debut UK race victory Murray said: "It's been a long time coming. I didn't win last year and I had some bad luck in the first few races of this season but I knew it was only a matter of time before I would take a win. It is a big relief to get it over with. I would like to dedicate the win to everyone who has helped me along the way in particular my sponsors.'
Sunday's seventh round of the championship proved to be the most action and incident packed of the season by far and for the Motorsport Ireland 'Young Racing Driver of the Year' finalist chances of a second win were dashed on the opening lap. Starting from fourth on the grid, the Holfeld F1 Components backed ace was forced to avoid an incident between Ed Pead and Vince Martin causing the Irishman to make an unscheduled visit to the pits. He eventually finished 15th.
Now sixth in the standings, the former Irish karting Champion heads to Rockingham in two weeks time (22nd June) for another double header where he will be aiming to visit the top of the podium for a second time.
